2020 MTV音樂錄影帶大獎（VMA）原訂在布魯克林的巴克萊中心（Barclays Center）舉行，但是受新冠肺炎疫情影響，改延期至8月30日，並轉移到多個室外地點舉行。本屆最大贏家是奪下5個獎項的Lady Gaga，其中3項屬於與Ariana Grande合作的〈Rain On Me〉，包括年度歌曲、最佳搭擋、最佳電影技術，她們也在這場保持社交距離的頒獎典禮中合作演出；另外兩項是年度藝人獎，以及首度頒發的Tricon獎，表揚Lady Gaga對藝術與慈善的貢獻。開場時，主持人Keke Palmer也在特別向8月28日逝世的Chadwick Boseman致敬。
BTS 防彈少年團抱回最佳團體、最佳流行、最佳KPOP與最佳編舞（〈On〉）四項大獎，現場演出則表演最新單曲〈Dynamite〉。年度音樂錄影帶則由The Weeknd的〈Blinding Lights〉奪得，同時憑此曲獲頒最佳節奏藍調，他在兩次得獎感言都為因槍擊事件身亡的非裔美籍人士Jacob Blake、Breonna Taylor之死發聲，呼籲為他們伸張正義。
